On June 19th Woodstock Triathlon Club will hold a kids duathlon in Southside Park. KidS Du will be a multisport event of run-bike-run for kids aged 3 to 13 years. This is a non-competitive event with a focus on participation, not winning. It’s a way for kids to be motivated and gain self-confidence while getting fit and having fun. Challenge events like this can be a doorway to an active and healthy lifestyle.

Head Coach Dave Jenkin says, “The KidS Du is an activity that the Triathlon Club has set as a goal since the club’s inception in February of last year.” As a retired Phys Ed teacher, he recognizes the need to keep kids active and the duathlon was one way that the club could inspire young kids to have fun while engaging in physical activity. “The emphasis is on creating a fun environment for kids and their families where winning is not the ultimate goal. It’s getting out there and challenging yourself to complete a healthy activity and have fun while doing it.”

KidS Du will have specific courses structured for the various age groups of 3, 4, 5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 years. It is expected that the majority of athletes will be in the 3 to 5 age group but WTC is encouraging sport teams to enter as a way to involve older age groups.

What is required of an athlete? Just a pair of running shoes, a good bike and a willingness to have fun. The bike can have two, three or even four wheels (trainers). One parent must complete the event with their three to five year old to ensure that they follow the course. Parents of disabled athletes will be encouraged to participate with their child too.

The Woodstock Triathlon Club is a non-profit organization and they are looking for sponsors to help support this event. If your business would like to be a part of this event.

The KidS Du also has volunteer opportunities, particularly for students looking to get in their hours of service. They need you. There is information on how you can help on their website.
