Deller gets the nod from Hockey Canada

Wednesday May 07, 2008

One of Ingersoll’s own female ice hockey goalies, Laura Deller, received an invitation to represent Ontario at the Hockey Canada 2008 IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) hockey tournament May 1 to 4. She joins a team of Peewee AA select 12 and under girls for the World Youth Tournament held in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the IIHF and the 2008 IIHF World Championship.
The team centred out of Burlington, also travels to Rochester, New York May 23 to 25 and back to Toronto June 20 to 22 to complete the teams tournament action with hopes of raising Canadian scouting interests for the Canadian Women’s Olympic Team in the future.

Deller got her start as a goalie at age 8 when she successfully guarded the net for the 2002/03 novice boys Ingersoll Express team who won the OMHA and Southern Counties championships that year. Interestingly, she actually made the team initially as a forward but in the absence of a goaltender, she put her road hockey skills into action and has not looked back as a goalie since.
She often mentions her appreciation for head coach Tom Tyrrell who gave her the start as a net-minder and her first goalie coach Rob Viscontas when she played out of Aylmer who helped her with improved technique.
